How often should I clean my carpets?

To extend the life of your carpets, you should have them cleaned regularly. But how often should you have your carpets cleaned? Of course, to some degree, that’s a highly personal decision. It depends on how highly used your carpets are, whether they cover the most heavily trafficked areas in your home, and whether there are extensive stains. It also depends on whether you have pets, anyone in your family suffers from allergies, or whether you have kids.

Most experts agree that your carpets should be cleaned roughly every twelve to eighteen months, though it’s safe to say that lightly used carpets in homes with less traffic (or no kids or pets) might need to be cleaned less often. Incredibly high traffic areas, on the other hand, might need to be cleaned as often as every 3-6 months.

Why so often? You should think of professional carpet cleaning as preventative maintenance, just like you’d think of changing the oil in your car or the air filters in your house. If you wait too long to change them, you put unnecessary stress on your car or HVAC system. Not changing your oil often enough can damage your engine. Not changing your air filters often enough, on the other hand, can put strain on your HVAC system and affect the purity of the air your breathe.

If you wait too long to clean your carpets, the dirt, grime, and allergens that are already present in your carpets from normal wear and tear will be ground deeper into the carpet. More and more dirt, soil, and dander will gather on top of the ground in messes. Stains will have longer to set, permanently changing the color of the carpet’s fibers.

The longer the dirt and stains are present on the carpet, the harder it is to clean and, ultimately, the shorter its life span.

If you’re considering having your carpets professionally cleaned, make sure you thoroughly research your options. Most carpet cleaning companies either offer dry cleaning or steam cleaning, but they’re really very different.

In fact, dry cleaning has several major advantages over steam cleaning. Dry cleaning uses less moisture, which means that you’ll be able to walk on your carpets again right away. (After steam cleaning, on the other hand, you have to stay off your carpets for 24-48 hours!) Not only that, but there’s less risk of mold and mildew growing under your carpets. Not only that, but some of the harder to treat stains will reappear just a few days after steam cleaning, or require several treatments to be removed—which is not the case with dry cleaning.
